Listening needs to be a focused activity. Multitasking and listening do not mix. Listening is the most under used communications skill.  We need to work hard at effective listening.

Eleven ideas to increase success with listening include:

  1. Remove other thoughts.
  2. Listen intently – you can’t learn less.
  3. Listen for ideas or the essence.
  4. Be responsible for listening.
  5. Stay focused even if the speaker is boring or repetitive
  6. Take notes to say focused.
  7. Confirm and clarify frequently
  8. Maintain eye contact.
  9. Maintain positive facial expression
  10. Maintain alert posture.
  11. Nod to demonstrate interest.
