Use a problem-solving format before making a decision.

Seven ideas to increase your success in problem-solving include:

  1. state the issue in the form of several different questions.
  2. Identify the criteria for the solution– On what basis should you make the decision?   What will the solution look like?  What concerns will you have addressed?  What factors need to be considered?
  3. Consider all of the possible causes of the problem.
  4. Generate many alternatives.
  5. Select the best alternatives using the solution criteria identified in step 2.
  6. After implementation.
  7. Follow-up to confirm the success of your problem-solving process.
