Being able to say what needs to be said diplomatically is an essential skill.

Nine ideas to increase your success in disagreeing diplomatically include:

  1. Repeat the other person’s position to demonstrate your understanding.
  2. Look for indication that you’ve captured their views… if they don’t say they agree, are they nodding?
  3. Restate until you get their agreement.
  4. Value their position. Say, “I can see the value of…”
  5. Always follow with “however”… never “but, before introducing your position.
  6. Discuss your differing opinions, strategies, options or alternate recommendations.
  7. Keep you tone of voice neutral.
  8. Use neutral facial expression.
  9. Use relaxed body language.
